A Sanskrit-English Dictionary is the essential reference for Sanskrit scholars. This comprehensive work includes over 180,000 words and definitions. An intricate language destined to occupy the foremost rank throughout Europe as an instrument of linguistic training needs greater facilities for its acquisition. Some may smile at the idea of any Oriental language acquiring greater weight as an instrument of training among Occidental peoples whose vigorous mental faculties require a more suitable discipline for their development. It contains a standard reference for scholars, entries arranged etymologically, special reference to cognate Indo-European languages, references to literature or authorities for every entry, definitions include notes on mythology, literature, religion, and philosophy. A work of the kind here submitted to the students of Sanskrit must be left to prove its usefulness by actual experiment. Nevertheless the plan of the present Dictionary is so novel that he must crave permission to introduce it with a longer explanation than might otherwise be needed.

Sir Monier Monier-Williams, KCIE was the second Boden Professor of Sanskrit at Oxford University, England. He studied, documented and taught Asian languages, especially Sanskrit, Persian and Hindustani. He taught Asian languages, at the East India Company College from 1844 until 1858, when company rule in India ended after the 1857 rebellion. He came to national prominence during the 1860 election campaign for the Boden Chair of Sanskrit at Oxford University, in which he stood against Max Müller.
