Adventure and ancient mysteries at the heart of the 'hippy trail' in the late 1960's. American traveler, Joseph Zerretti, disillusioned with Western culture, is prepared travel to India when he meets Lissa, an English visitor. After their brief romance, Lissa returns home, and Joe, pausing to get over their separation, takes a detour to the island of Crete. On the ferry, he meets Heini, a German student, who reveals the mysteries of Europe's oldest civilization, the Minoans.
At the coastal village of Matala, Joe finds an elaborate cave commune and a beautiful bay with a mythic past. Haunted by his separation from Lissa, he begins to have dreams involving her in this ancient setting. He takes residence in a cave overlooking the tiny village and soon encounters tourists, travelers and long-time troglodytes. He also becomes involved in events that endangers the very existence of the hippie commune with the Greek military police. While delving into the secrets of the Minoans, deepening his understanding of his Western heritage, his visit is ended abruptly by disastrous political events in Europe during the summer of '68, and he again becomes determined to resume his eastward journey along the then famous 'hippy trail.'
