This manual presents 31 laboratory-tested experiments in hydraulics and hydraulic machines.

This manual is organized into two parts. The first part equips the student with the basics of fluid properties, flow properties, various flow measuring devices and fundamentals of hydraulic machines. The second part presents experiments to help students understand the basic concepts, the phenomenon of flow through pipes and flow through open channels, and the working principles of hydraulic machines. For each experiment, the apparatus required for conducting the experiment, the probable experimental set-up, the theory behind the experiment, the experimental procedure, and the method of presenting the experimental data are all explained. Viva questions (with answers) are also given. In addition, the errors arising during recording of observations, and various precautions to be taken during experimentation are explained with each experiment.

The manualis primarily designed for the undergraduate degree students and diploma students of civil engineering, mechanical engineering and chemical engineering.

R.V. RAIKAR, PhD, is Professor of Civil Engineering and Dean Planning, KLE Dr. M.S. Sheshgiri College of Engineering and Technology, Belgaum, Karnataka. Dr. Raikar has taught Elements of Civil Engineering and Engineering Mechanics, Strength of Materials, Fluid Mechanics and Machines, Hydrology and Irrigation Engineering, Operations Research for more than 25 years. His areas of specialization are water resources engineering and sediment transportation. His research interests include fluvial hydraulics, study of flow field near structures, water resources systems, hydrology, artificial neural network and genetic algorithm. Dr. Raikar has published 60 research papers in international journals and conferences. He visits National Chung Hsing University, Taiwan as a Visiting Professor. The biographical sketch of Dr. Raikar has been published in the Marquis Who’s Who in the World.

Besides being a Fellow of the Institution of Engineers (India), Dr. Raikar is a member of numerous societies, such as ISH (India), ISTE (India), IAHR (Netherlands), IAHS (Wellingford), and WASER (Beijing). Dr. Raikar is a reviewer of various National and International Journals. He is also a member of various boards of studies and boards of examinations of various universities.
