A Voyage to Arcturus, authored by Scottish writer David Lindsay and initially released in 1920, is a remarkable novel that blends elements of fantasy, philosophy, and science fiction to delve into the essence of good and evil and their intricate connection to existence. Esteemed critic, novelist, and philosopher Colin Wilson hailed it as the "greatest novel of the twentieth century," and its impact reverberated through C. S. Lewis' Space Trilogy and, subsequently, J. R. R. Tolkien, who avidly devoured its pages. Clive Barker lauded it as a "masterpiece" and an "extraordinary work of immense grandeur."

David Lindsay (1876 – 1945), a Scottish author, is best known for his philosophical science fiction novel A Voyage to Arcturus (1920). Despite being educated at Colfe's School in Lewisham and earning a scholarship to university, financial constraints led him to pursue a career in business. He became an insurance clerk at Lloyd's of London and achieved success in his profession. However, his career was interrupted when he joined the military during the First World War at the age of 40. Initially enlisting in the Grenadier Guards, he later joined the Royal Army Pay Corps and rose to the rank of Corporal. His novel A Voyage to Arcturus was published in 1920, it did not garner significant success, The novel exhibited connections to Scottish fantasy writers like George MacDonald, whose work Lindsay was acquainted with, and it exerted a profound influence on C.S. Lewis's Out of the Silent Planet. J.R.R. Tolkien expressed avid interest in Lindsay's book and described it as a work encompassing philosophy, religion, and morality. He dedicated a significant portion of his time to his final work, The Witch, which remained unpublished during his lifetime.
