This informative book - by an artist who began to paint after he retired - focuses on the tips and techniques not found in many "how-to" watercolor books. Beginners will learn all the basics of watercolor painting but also practical tips such how to set up a work space and select art supplies without spending a lot of money. While many watercolor guides focus on specific topics such as landscape painting, this "How-To" is unusual in its focus on important art lessons - color theory and perspective, among them - as well as unconventional techniques such as creating textures with salt and plastic wrap. In fact, the 151-page book is packed with information and includes step-by-step instructions as well as numerous tips, "Words of Wisdom" passages, and quotes from famous artists - all part of the author's intent to instruct with humor. As the book's cover suggests, the book has an additional focus on unique frames. The author has a regional following for creating unique frames from discarded and found objects. He includes an extensive visual catalog of his frames here, describing how he created a frame and explaining his inspirations. He hopes that his readers will be equally inspired to make their own frames for their paintings, displaying them for friends and family. As Joe says, art is an adventure meant to be shared.

Octogenarian Joe Kowalewski took up painting after he retired as an engineer following a long career at a nuclear power plant in Southern New Jersey. In many ways, his former profession helped him conceive many of the easy-to-understand steps found in this book. At the same time, he also has a gift for innovation and is known for his sense of humor that has helped him to overcome painting setbacks that every artist experiences. He paints and lives in Ridley Park, Pennsylvania and has worked as a handyman and volunteer for the past nineteen years at the nearby Chester County Art Association in West Chester, the oldest art school in the Brandywine Valley that was founded by N.C. Wyeth.
