Absolute Key to Occult Science by Papus (Gérard Encausse) is a significant text in Western occultism, exploring the Tarot as a tool for spiritual enlightenment and initiation. Papus presents the Tarot as “the most ancient book in the world,” linking its symbolism to Egyptian mysteries, Kabbalah, and Hermetic philosophy. Published in 1892, the book includes detailed descriptions of the Major and Minor Arcana, their symbolic interpretations, and numerology. By interpreting the Tarot as a guide to universal laws and personal transformation, Papus’s work became influential among occultists and remains valued for its esoteric depth and practical insights.

Gérard Encausse, known as Papus (1865–1916), was a French physician, occultist, and founder of the Martinist Order. Born in Spain to a Spanish mother and a French father, he moved to Paris, where he studied medicine and esotericism. Influenced by Eliphas Lévi and Saint-Yves d'Alveydre, he explored Kabbalah, Tarot, and magic, co-founding the Kabbalistic Order of the Rose-Cross in 1888. Papus was also a prominent writer, publishing extensively on occult science. He served as an advisor to Tsar Nicholas II and joined France’s medical corps during World War I, dying of tuberculosis in 1916.
