Acute myocardial infarction (AMI) occurs when the blood flow to a part of the heart decreases or stops, resulting in damage to the heart muscle. This happens when an atherosclerotic plaque ruptures and blocks the coronary artery. It can also be caused due to coronary artery spasms triggered by cocaine use, emotional stress or extreme cold. The chief symptom is chest discomfort or pain. Faintness, shortness of breath, nausea, exhaustion and cold sweats are also observed. Acute myocardial infarction may cause an irregular heartbeat and result in cardiogenic shock, heart failure or cardiac arrest. Most AMIs occur due to coronary artery disease. ECGs, coronary angiography and blood tests aid in the diagnosis of AMI. Quick management of myocardial infarction is important. Aspirin, nitroglycerin or opioids may be prescribed for its management. Supplemental oxygen may be given to those experiencing shortness of breath. This book explores the emerging aspects of acute myocardial infarction in present day medicine.
