Lange Zeit galt die ADHS als eine psychische Störung, welche ausschlie lich im Kinder-und Jugendalter auftritt. Hingegen zeigen wissenschaftliche Evaluationen, dass sich die Störung bei zwei bis drei Prozent der betroffenen Kinder- und Jugendlichen bis ins Erwachsenenalter fortsetzt. Bei der ADHS im Erwachsenenalter wird von einem bio-psycho-sozialen Bedingungsmodell ausgegangen, dabei wird die Fehlfunktion im Bereich der Selbstregulation als zentrale Rolle angenommen. Die Diagnosestellung gestaltet sich bei den betroffenen Erwachsenen als schwierig, da die ADHS häufig mit psychiatrischen Begleiterkrankungen einhergeht. Dabei führt die korrekte Diagnosestellung, welcher eine entsprechende Behandlung folgt, zu einer beträchtlichen Verbesserung der Lebensqualität und zu einem besseren Funktionieren in Alltagssituationen. Die Kernsymptomatik der ADHS kann mittels pharmakologischer Intervention wirksam behandelt werden. Die sozial-behavioralen Strategien können über die Reduzierung der Kernsymptomatik hinaus, die Zielbereiche, Organisation, Aufschieben und den Selbstwert positiv beeinflussen. Zudem führte die Gruppentherapie im Rahmen der ADHS bei den Teilnehmern zu einer höheren Zufriedenheit und zu einer Verringerung der depressiven Symptomatik. Ein Wirksamkeitsvergleich zwischen pharmakologischer- und psychotherapeutischer Intervention hebt die hohe Wirksamkeit der sozialbehavioralen Verfahren hervor.
