Enzymes are biological catalysts that are required for the sustenance of life. Nearly all metabolic processes occurring in the cell require enzyme catalysis for sustaining life. Enzymes are generally proteins, although some are catalytic RNA molecules. The difference between enzymes and any other catalysts is their high degree of specificity. Such specificity arises from their unique 3D structures. The activity of enzymes can be affected by other molecules. There are some therapeutic drugs and poisons that may inhibit enzyme activity. Enzymes are also used commercially for the synthesis of antibiotics. The activity of enzymes needs to be closely regulated for homeostasis. The overproduction, underproduction, mutation or deletion of any enzyme can lead to genetic diseases, such as phenylketonuria, Tay-Sachs disease, pseudocholinesterase deficiency, etc. This book aims to shed light on some of the unexplored aspects of enzymology and the recent researches in this field.
