John Lally John Lally has been recognized for his service as a soldier, his achievements in civilian life, and his support for veterans and active duty troops and their families. John served as a platoon sergeant in A Co., 1-506 Infantry while assigned to the 101st Airborne Division in I Corps, Vietnam. He earned the Combat Infantryman Badge, Bronze Star, Army Commendation Medal, Air Medal and Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry. Following military service, he was a college history teacher and administrator for a number of years before accepting the first of a long series of executive positions in Minnesota State Government. He has been COO or CIO for several major agencies and, at the time of his retirement in 2009, was state director of strategic IT planning and portfolio management. Besides his official duties, he was an elected school board member for 16 years and was appointed to leadership positions in many charitable foundations and boards. He has served as an international instructor in government administration for leaders of emerging nations on three continents and has been a guest lecturer on strategic management at Harvard's Kennedy School, the University of Wisconsin, and Minnesota's Humphrey School of Government and Carlson School of Management. He has authored a numer of articles about strategic planning, and in 2012 published his first book of poetry from his experience in Vietnam. The book is used by counselors to help reach veterans with PTSD, and all receipts from the book go to support the 506th Association.
