Against Hermogenes is a book written by Tertullian, a prominent early Christian writer and theologian. The book is a polemic against the teachings of Hermogenes, a second-century Gnostic theologian who denied the doctrine of creation ex nihilo and claimed that matter was eternal. Tertullian argues that Hermogenes' teachings are not only false but also dangerous, as they undermine the Christian belief in the sovereignty of God and the authority of scripture. He also defends the orthodox Christian view of the nature of God and the relationship between God and the world. The book is considered an important work in the early Christian apologetic tradition and a valuable source for understanding the debates and controversies of the early church.He cannot say that it was as its Lord that God employed Matter for His creative works, for He could not have been the Lord of a substance which was co-equal with Himself.
