Folgende Ausarbeitung will beiden Umständen Rechnung tragen und eine Verbindung von Migration und der Verbreitung von HIV/AIDS herstellen. Betracht man die Infektionsraten in den Ländern Sub-Sahara Afrikas ist sofort augenscheinlich, dass die Verbindung Migration und AIDS/HIV nicht ursächlich durch Armut oder mangelhafte Gesundheitsversorgung zurückzuführen ist. Länder wie Botswana und die Republik Südafrika, die Länder mit den regional höchsten Pro-Kopf Einkommen, haben gleichzeitig die höchsten Infektionsraten. Die Epidemiologie von HIV/AIDS scheint mit mobilen Population bzw. Migranten verknüpft und es ist herauszuarbeiten, inwieweit Migration und Mobilität die Vulnerabilität gegenüber einer AIDS/HIV Infektion erhöhen. Gleichwohl soll hier schon darauf verwiesen werden, dass Migration und AIDS/HIV eine hochkomplexe Verbindung eingehen und monokausale Erklärungsansätze nicht greifen. Der Modus innerhalb dessen AIDS/HIV verbreitet wird, variiert hochgradig innerhalb der Kulturen. Afrika, regional insbesondere Sub-Sahara Afrika, zeigt sich als am stärksten von der AIDS/HIV Epidemie betroffen. Gleichwohl in dieser Region nur 10% der Weltbevölkerung leben, finden sich dort 9 von 10 AIDS/HIV Kranken weltweit (vgl. Rabbow 2001: 17). Studien die sich der Analyse von Migrationsströmen bzw. -gründen widmen, sehen sich oftmals mit der Problematik konfrontiert, dass Zahlen zu afrikanischen Migrationsströmen oftmals Messfehler beinhalten und ungenaue Zahlen wiedergeben.
