In neuester Zeit gewinnt die Intensivhaltung der Haustiere auch in der Schweiz immer mehr an Boden. Beim Bau der Stallanlagen geht man vor allem von der Wirtschaftlichkeit (Personaleinsparung, Rationalisierung) aus und nimmt auf das Tier und seine Bediirfnisse nur insoweit Riicksicht, als dies fUr die Produk- tion beziehungsweise Leistung bedeutungsvoll ist. Diese Entwicklung wird aber heute von Oekologen, yom Tierschutz und vie len Konsumenten aufs stiirkste be- kiimpft. Als Folge davon entwickelten sich zwischen Tierhaltern und aktiven Tierschiitzern oft hitzige Diskussionen. Nach und nach wurden dann auch die durchaus berechtigten Forderungen nach einer neutralen wissenschaftlichen Ab- kliirung dieses Fragenkomplexes immer lauter. Da die Intensivhaltung bei den Hiihnern am weitesten vorangetrieben wurde, gedieh hier natiirlich das grosste Bediirfnis an einer diesbeziiglichen Forschungsarbeit. In der heutigen Hiihnerhaltung kennen wir vier gebriiuchliche Aufstallungssyste- me: Die biiuerliche Auslaufhaltung und die intensiven Hallenbetriebe mit Kiifig-, Gitterrost- und Bodenhaltung. Eine immer grossere Verbreitung fand in den letzten Jahren die Kiifig- oder Batteriehaltung. Dies hat seinen Grund in den personal- und zeitsparenden Anlagen und in der grosstmoglichen Ausnutzung der Bodenfliiche des Betriebes. - 4 - 1.2. PROBLEM- UND AUFGABENSTELLUNG Durch die Beobachtung der Verhaltensweisen der Hiihner wurde versucht, Grundbedurfnisse aufzuzeigen und zu uberprufen, wie weit die Resultate aus den gebrauchlichen Haltungsformen tiergerechte Bedingungen aufweisen. Nach die- sen Grundsatzen wurde das lokomotorische und das akustische Ethogramm, die Pathologie der Fusse, die Feder-und Eiqualitat sowie die Rentabilitat unter- sucht.
