Die gute gesundheitliche Versorgung ermöglicht einer Vielzahl von Menschen, ein langes Leben zu führen. Doch aufgrund der geringen Anzahl von Geburten in Deutschland, gerät erstens der Generationenvertrag in Gefahr, was bedeutet, dass es zu wenige Menschen gibt, die die finanzielle Absicherung der alten Menschen in der Gesellschaft gewährleisten. Und zweitens gibt es nicht genügend Menschen in der Altenpflege, die einer immer pflegebedürftiger werdenden Bevölkerung ihre Betreuung zusichern können. Aus diesem Grund ist eine Weiterentwicklung der technischen Unterstützung für diese Menschen nötig. Die eHealth Group des Human Technology Center der RWTH Aachen beschäftigt sich daher mit der Entwicklung von technischen Geräten, die älteren und hilfebedürftigen Menschen den Alltag erleichtern. Im Rahmen dieses Forschungsfeldes, haben sich die Teilnehmer des Seminars, "Empirisch-experimentelle Forschungsmethodik in der Kommunikationswissenschaft", mit der Adaption und Akzeptanz dieser Assistenzsysteme beschäftigt. Ziel des Seminars ist es, einen Einblick in die praktische Anwendung der Methoden zu erhalten und gleichzeitig die Haltung der Bevölkerung in Deutschland zu Assistenzsystemen zu untersuchen.
