In Grecia, l'alchimia si sviluppò a partire dal VI secolo a.C., influenzata da filosofi come Talete, Empedocle e Platone. Questi filosofi sostenevano che tutte le cose erano composte da quattro elementi fondamentali: terra, acqua, aria e fuoco. L'alchimia greca si proponeva quindi di modificare la natura di questi elementi per ottenere nuove sostanze, in particolare l'oro.

In Mesopotamia, l'alchimia si sviluppò a partire dal II millennio a.C., influenzata dalla religione e dalla magia. Gli alchimisti mesopotamici credevano che fosse possibile trasformare i metalli vili in oro attraverso l'uso di formule magiche.

L'alchimia antica si diffuse in tutto il mondo mediterraneo e, a partire dal VII secolo d.C., fu influenzata dalla cultura araba. Gli alchimisti arabi contribuirono notevolmente allo sviluppo dell'alchimia, introducendo nuove tecniche e conoscenze.
