Each volume is introduced by a well-known student of the featured photographer. In this volume, the Webbs share their thoughts about a wide range of practical and philosophical issues, from questions about seeing and being in the world with a camera, to how to shape a complete body of work in a way that's both structured and intuitive. Award-winning novelist Teju Cole, a student of the Webbs, provides the introduction.

Cole, Teju: - Teju Cole is a photographer, essayist, and author born in the United States to Nigerian parents and raised in Nigeria. He is the author of two works of fiction: Every Day is for the Thief, a novella, and the novel Open City, which won the PEN/Hemingway Award; the New York City Book Award for Fiction; the Rosenthal Award, from the American Academy of Arts and Letters; and the Internationaler Literaturpreis, from the Haus der Kulturen der Welt, Berlin. He is a contributor to the New York Times, the New Yorker, and other publications.

Norris Webb, Rebecca: - Rebecca Norris Webb, originally a poet, often explores the complicated relationship between people and the natural world in her seven books, including The Glass Between Us (2006), Violet Isle: A Duet of Photographs from Cuba (2009, with Alex Webb), and My Dakota (2012). A 2019 NEA grant recipient, she has exhibited at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and the Cleveland Museum of Art, among other museums.

Webb, Alex: - Alex Webb has published more than fifteen books, including Memory City (2014, with Rebecca Norris Webb), La Calle: Photographs from Mexico (Aperture, 2016), as well as a survey of his color work, The Suffering of Light (Aperture, 2011). Webb became a full member of Magnum Photos in 1979. His work has been shown widely, and he has received numerous awards, including a Guggenheim Fellowship in 2007.

Webb, Alex: - Alex Webb was born in San Francisco in 1952. His photographs have been featured in The New York Times Magazine, Life, Stern, and National Geographic and exhibited at the Walker Art Center, Minneapolis, and the International Center of Photography and Whitney Museum of American Art in New York. He is a recipient of the Leica Medal of Excellence (2000) and a member of Magnum Photos.
