Studienarbeit aus dem Jahr 2006 im Fachbereich Germanistik - Neuere Deutsche Literatur, Note: 1,7, Université libre de Bruxelles (Langue et Littérature Germanique), Veranstaltung: Histoire approfondie de la littérature allemande, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Berlin Alexanderplatz von Alfred Döblin - das ist wirklich nicht nur "einfach eine Bahnstation", wie der S.-Fischer-Verlag anfangs kritisierte! - Dennoch ergänzte Alfred Döblin zum besseren Verständnis für den Leser und vor allem für den Seelenfrieden seines Verlegers den Untertitel 'Die Geschichte vom Franz Biberkopf', und das Buch avancierte nach seiner Veröffentlichung im Jahr 1929 zum bekanntesten Werk des Autors. Allein das Hinzufügen des Untertitels sagt bereits viel über die Konstellation im Roman aus: Der Protagonist und vermeintliche 'Held' Franz Biberkopf steht lediglich als Beispiel für den modernen Einzelmenschen in der Gro stadt. Die Gro stadt selbst aber gibt den Ton an; sie bestimmt den Rhythmus des Buches. Auf diese Weise werden der tägliche 'Lebenskampf' Biberkopfs und dessen Folgen beschrieben. Doch das Hauptthema reicht noch weiter: Gerade vor dem geschichtlichen Hintergrund der ausklingenden 20er Jahre erhält der Inhalt neue Brisanz. Inwiefern der 'Lebenskampf' Biberkopfs nicht nur als individuelle sondern als allgemeine Erfahrung aufgefasst werden kann, wird im Folgenden untersucht. Dabei spielt vor allem die gesellschaftlich-politische Kritik eine Rolle, die Döblin mit seinem Werk zum Ausdruck bringt. Um diese Kritik besser zu verstehen, werden des Weiteren Positionen Döblins als politischer Autor mit herangezogen. Ebenfalls wird auf das besondere Verhältnis zwischen Erzähler und Leser eingegangen. Vor der Herleitung der politischen Botschaft des Romans müssen jedoch, ausgehend von einer Charakteristik, die Kernprobleme des Protagonisten Biberkopf analysiert werden.
