The book details many powerful literary strategies for teachers from teaching the alphabet names and sounds, to reading words and sentences, to spelling and writing. Making connections, finding just right resources, assessing as a teaching moment, involvement of both the child's family and older children, and activities that parents can do at home with their child are all topics covered within the chapters. The appendix offers a suggested sequence for letter and word introduction, gives complete weekly word family spelling lists, offers foldable beginner reading books, and ties basic learning standards to the specific activities given. Independent of the amount of preparation before a child enters kindergarten, these ideas and activities will enable any child to become to become a reader during this first formal year of schooling.

Linda LaVergne currently teaches kindergarten in Washington State. Throughout her 23+ years of teaching, she has also been a Reading Support Specialist in her district, assisting teachers with ideas to help students become successful readers and writers, and has taught grades K, 2, 3, and 5. The many literacy courses she's attended for teachers have led her to adapt these ideas to her own kindergarten classroom, and share with others. Every child in her kindergarten class each year, independent of how little or how much they were prepared for school, has successfully advanced to first grade as a reader. LaVergne earned a Master's Degree in Education, with an emphasis on Classroom Teaching, from the University of Puget Sound. She has an endorsement for Early Childhood Education. Her husband and her together have five children and eight grandchildren.
