Ziel dieser Arbeit ist eine Diskussion darüber, ob Altersarmut zu einer Spaltung der Gesellschaft führen kann. Kapitel 1 befasst sich mit der Beschreibung und Definition von Armut. Es wird aufgezeigt, wie sich Armut messen lässt und an welchen Merkmalen und Faktoren dies ermittelt wird. Kapitel 2 setzt einen Schwerpunkt auf die Einkommensverteilungen im Alter und versucht die Ursachen der Altersarmut im Einzelnen zu erörtern. Dargestellt wird die Einkommenssituation im Alter von Frauen, Männern und Paaren. Des Weiteren wird der Frage nachgegangen, ob sich die soziale Lebenslage über den Lebenslauf hinweg verändert und ob die Lebenslage ausschlaggebend für Armut im Alter ist. Kapitel 3 legt den Fokus auf soziale Exklusion; einer möglichen Folge von Armut im Alter. Im Wesentlichen stehen hier die Themen Einsamkeit und Gesundheit im Vor-dergrund. Das Kapitel befasst sich mit der Definition von Einsamkeit und benennt Risikofaktoren. Es wird versucht aufzuzeigen, wie soziale Exklusion die Gesundheit beeinflussen kann. Kapitel 4 greift mögliche Interventionsma nahmen auf, um gegen Armut im Alter präventiv vorzubeugen. Hier wird auf das Handlungskonzept "NRW hält zusammen" der nordrhein-westfälischen Landesregierung verwiesen. Einige wesentliche Aspekte aus diesem Konzept werden vorgestellt und erörtert. Abschlie end greift das Fazit die Positionen, Probleme und Erkenntnisse auf, um zu untersuchen, ob Fortschritte zu beobachten und wie konkrete Handlungsbedarfe zu definieren sind.
