Amaury, novela romantica (con momentos de tragedia y comedia) sobre el tema general de los celos, situado en el campo, en las afueras de Paris entre 1838-1839. En Amaury, Dumas intenta una diseccion de los celos artisticos, pero todos sus personajes segun Alejandro Dumas, giran en torno a unos celos considerados como una emocion indigna. Amaury es tambien de interes por ser como el unico intento de Dumas en crear una novela epistolar. La novela se abre con un grupo de aristocratas que conversan en una tertulia. Uno de ellos hace la pregunta: Se muere de amor? En respuesta, muestra un manuscrito que pretende ser el diario y las cartas de la familia del difunto senor d'Avrigny, viudo y medico de la corte del rey, que cuentan la romantica historia de Amaury de Leoville, un joven rico y huerfano que vive con el doctor d'Avrigny, y sus dos amores: Madeleine y Antoinette. Una historia interesante, ya que bascula entre la vision del padre y el amante, a traves de los pasajes de sus diarios, en contraste con la version de Antoinette, a traves de las cartas que intercambio con Amaury. Amaury cuenta la odisea de un joven acomodado que, al quedar huerfano, es acogido por un ilustre medico y criado como uno mas de la familia. La hija del doctor, Madeleine, le acoge como un hermano, pero el paso de los anos trae consigo el amor entre ambos, para desgracia del doctor D'Avrigny, que siente celos del joven al arrebatarle a su unica hija, viudo como es desde el nacimiento de la muchacha. Su unico consuelo es la llegada de una prima de la que debe hacerse cargo, que se convertira en su sosten ante la inminente marcha de su hija, convertida en esposa de Amaury. Sin embargo, la fragil salud de Madeleine complicara la vida de todos los personajes de una forma imprevista. La novela esta, nominalmente, integrada por el diario y las cartas se leen en voz alta. Amaury de Leoville, joven rico y huerfano, inicio su carrera en el servicio diplomatico frances. Amaury es una representacion perfecta de las caracteristicas que definen el folletin romantico del siglo XIX, con sus defectos y virtudes. Como novela, Alexandre Dumas la pergeno con una modelica perfeccion formal, distribuyendo la trama a lo largo de breves episodios que conducen al lector, mediante un crescendo emocional (algo inocente visto hoy dia, pero, sin duda eficaz en los primeros anos del siglo XIX), hasta un desenlace que premia a todos los protagonistas de la historia. Por otro lado, ese esquema previsible y esos personajes que han de adaptarse al mismo lastran una obra que, quiza por el paso del tiempo, no consigue involucrar al lector en sus meandros narrativos; Dumas era un excepcional contador de historias, pero cuando estas no contienen las suficientes dosis de accion ni se centran en protagonistas algo complejos, no logra una obra coherente."
