Diese Tatsache führt zwangsläufig zu Veränderungen von Unternehmensstrukturen wie beispielsweise zu Neukombinationen von Produktionsfaktoren oder zu veränderten Unternehmensgrenzen, ebenso zu Branchen-, Markt- und Beschäftigungsveränderungen, welche sich letztlich in einem Strukturwandel bemerkbar machen können. Werden diese Entwicklungen durch technologische Strukturveränderungen hervorgerufen und als Aufeinanderfolge von langfristigen Zeiträumen unterschiedlichen Wachstums aufgefasst, so verläuft der volkswirtschaftliche Strukturwandel - wie der russische Wirtschaftswissenschaftler Nikolaj Kondratieff nachwies - in langen Wellen oder Zyklen, die sich jeweils auf einen Zeitraum von ungefähr 50 Jahren erstrecken. Stets sind es folgeträchtige, innovative Erfindungen, die zu neuartigen Technologien führen und die lang andauernden Aufschwungphasen einleiten (vgl. Little 1997, S. 30). Folgende Zyklen werden beschrieben (vgl. Wirtz 2001, S. 14): - Die erste lange Welle war die industrielle Revolution. Sie umfasste in etwa den Zeit-raum von 1782 bis 1845. In ihr kamen der mechanische Webstuhl und die Dampfmaschine zum Einsatz. - Die zweite Welle wurde vom Eisenbahnbau und der Stahlindustrie getragen und dauerte von etwa 1845 bis 1892. - In der dritten langen Welle, ca. 1892 bis 1948, bilden die Elektrizität und neue Entwicklungen in der Chemie, vor allem von Düngemitteln, die Aufschwungfaktoren. Hinzu kam die erste wirtschaftliche Nutzung des Verbrennungsmotors. - Die tragenden Faktoren der vierten langen Welle waren die allgemeine Motorisierung und die Verkehrstechnik, die Molekularbiologie, die Kunststoffindustrien sowie Funk und Fernsehen. Diese Welle begann um 1948 und endete um 1995.
