Among The Freaks is a novel written by William Livingston Alden and published in 1896. The book is set in the late 19th century and follows the story of a young man named Harry Templeton who, after losing his job, decides to join a traveling circus. As Harry travels with the circus, he encounters a variety of characters, including a bearded lady, a giant, and a contortionist. He becomes fascinated with the lives of these ""freaks"" and begins to develop close relationships with them. However, as Harry becomes more involved in the circus world, he begins to see the darker side of the industry. He witnesses the exploitation of the performers and the mistreatment they face at the hands of their employers. Harry must navigate his own moral compass as he grapples with the ethical implications of his involvement with the circus. Throughout the book, Alden explores themes of identity, acceptance, and exploitation. The novel offers a unique perspective on the circus world and sheds light on the often-overlooked lives of the performers.This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
