Among The Guerillas is a book written by James R. Gilmore and first published in 1866. The book is a memoir of Gilmore's experiences during the American Civil War, specifically his time spent with various guerrilla groups in Missouri. Gilmore, a journalist and adventurer, joined the Union army in 1861 but was soon captured by Confederate forces and held as a prisoner of war. After his release, he joined a group of Union guerrillas and participated in various raids and skirmishes against Confederate forces. Later, he switched sides and joined a Confederate guerrilla group, where he participated in similar activities. Throughout the book, Gilmore provides a firsthand account of the brutal and chaotic nature of guerrilla warfare, as well as the political and social tensions that fueled it. He also provides insight into the motivations and tactics of both Union and Confederate guerrillas, as well as the impact of the war on the civilian population. Overall, Among The Guerillas is a vivid and compelling account of a little-known aspect of the Civil War.This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
