About The Author

Robert Gordon Latham FRS (1812–1888) was a prominent English ethnologist and philologist whose works bridged linguistics, anthropology, and human geography. Beginning with An Elementary English Grammar (1843), he contributed significantly to language education. He later turned to ethnology, producing influential studies like The Natural History of the Varieties of Mankind (1850), Descriptive Ethnology (1858), and Ethnology of India (1859), analyzing human races, migrations, and cultures. His work Logic in its Application to Language (1856) linked language structure with reasoning. Latham’s scholarship reflected a Victorian drive to classify human diversity and language, influencing both education and early anthropological thought.
