An Elementary Latin Dictionary by Charlton T. Lewis, published in 1890, is a simplified, student-oriented version of the larger Latin Dictionary co-authored with Charles Short. Designed for beginners and intermediate learners, it provides clear, concise definitions of Latin words along with essential grammatical information such as parts of speech, principal parts of verbs, and typical usage. The dictionary focuses on vocabulary commonly found in classical texts, particularly those used in schools. Compact yet comprehensive, it serves as an accessible reference tool that supports reading, translation, and vocabulary building, making Latin more approachable for students in academic or self-study settings.

Charlton Thomas Lewis (1834–1904) was an American lawyer, writer, and lexicographer best known for his contributions to Latin-English scholarship. He co-authored A Latin Dictionary (1879) with Charles Short—commonly known as Harper's Latin Dictionary—a comprehensive reference still used in classical studies. He later produced more accessible versions, including the Latin Dictionary for Schools (1889) and An Elementary Latin Dictionary (1890), designed for students. Lewis also translated Bengel’s Gnomon of the New Testament (1861) and wrote A History of Germany (1870). His work combined scholarly precision with educational clarity, making Latin language and literature more accessible to both scholars and learners.
