This book, an English and Hindoostanee naval dictionary, addresses the lack of resources for officers communicating with native seamen aboard ships. The author, during a voyage between England and India, compiles technical terms and sea phrases by translating English naval works and consulting experts. The primary reference is Moore's "The Midshipman’s Vocabulary." The dictionary includes corrupted words used by Lascars, differentiating English and Portuguese origins. Pronunciation variations are noted, emphasizing practical understanding. Some terms from Gilchrist’s British Indian Monitor are incorporated. Despite pronunciation differences among native guides, the author provides a comprehensive guide for officers dealing with diverse Lascar crews in various Indian ports.

Thomas Roebuck (1781–1819), a Scottish army officer in the East India Company, demonstrated expertise in Hindustani while serving in the 17th regiment of native infantry. Noteworthy for his linguistic contributions, Roebuck assisted in creating an English-Hindustani dictionary during his leave in Edinburgh and later compiled an English and Hindustani Naval Dictionary. Attached to Fort William College, he engaged in diverse linguistic projects, such as a Hindu-Persian dictionary. Roebuck passed away in Calcutta in 1819, leaving a legacy of works like "The Annals of the College of Fort William" and "A Collection of Proverbs and Proverbial Phrases."
