An English-Cornish Dictionary by Frederick W. P. Jago, published in 1887, is a comprehensive lexicon aimed at preserving and revitalizing the Cornish language. Compiled from historical texts, local dialects, and earlier glossaries, it contains thousands of English headwords with Cornish equivalents, reflecting the richness of the language as once spoken in Cornwall. Jago, a Cornish physician and linguist, created this work during a period of cultural revival, emphasizing historical authenticity and regional usage. The dictionary remains a cornerstone of Cornish linguistic heritage and has served as a vital reference for scholars, learners, and enthusiasts of the Celtic language revival movement.

Frederick William Pearce Jago (1817–1911) was a Cornish physician and scholar renowned for his contributions to the preservation of the Cornish language. Born in Bodmin and baptized as a Wesleyan Methodist, he practiced medicine in Plymouth for many years before retiring to St Germans. His most influential works include The Ancient Language and the Dialect of Cornwall (1882) and An English–Cornish Dictionary (1887), both key texts in the Celtic revival movement. Jago drew on historical sources, dialects, and linguistic scholarship to document and revitalize Cornish. His legacy endures in the study and preservation of Cornwall’s linguistic and cultural heritage.
