The present book “An Introduction to Medicinal Chemistry” is an introduction to the chemical and biological parameters, challenges and underlying principles involved in the early stages of drug discovery from bench to preclinical stage. My main objective has been to compile various aspects of drug discovery principles in the form of a handbook instead a textbook. The book may provide one-stop information dealing with mechanistic, biological and chemical aspects of drug design and improvisation of their actions. This has been exemplified by providing relevant examples of drugs for a better understanding. ·Cell Signaling and Diseases ·An Overview of Drug Action ·The Modern Drug Development Process ·Strategies for Identifying Hit Molecules ·Drug Design Strategies ·Role of Physicochemical Properties of Chemical Structures in Drug Design ·Receptorology ·Drug Receptor Theories ·Receptor Antagonists ·Drug-Target Interactions ·Pharmacokinetics ·Pharmacodynamics ·Role of Enzymes in Metabolism ·Digestive Enzymes

Dr. Bijoy Kundu worked as post-doctoral fellow at City University of New York, USA with Prof. Fred Naider for two years (1981–82), and at University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, Illinois, USA from 1989–91with Prof. K.L. Rinehart. After his return from USA in 1982, he joined as Scientist B at CSIR-CDRI in the division of Biopolymers and within two years of his joining, he was selected as Scientist C in the same division at CSIR-CDRI. Finally, after putting in 30 years of service he superannuated as Chief scientist and Head of the Department of Medicinal Chemistry of CSIR-CDRI, Lucknow, India.
