George A. Grierson’s An Introduction to the Maithili Language of North Bihar (1881–82) is a pioneering linguistic study in two parts. Part I presents a detailed grammar of Maithili, outlining its phonetics, morphology, syntax, and unique linguistic features, distinguishing it from Hindi and Bengali. Part II is a chrestomathy—a collection of texts including folk tales, songs, and proverbs—accompanied by an extensive vocabulary. Sourced from native speakers and scholars, Grierson’s work highlights Maithili’s rich oral and literary traditions. The book remains a foundational text for scholars of Indo-Aryan languages and affirms Maithili’s status as an independent and vibrant language.

Sir George Abraham Grierson (1851–1941) was a pioneering British linguist known for his extensive work on the languages of the Indian subcontinent. His magnum opus, the Linguistic Survey of India (1898–1928), cataloged over 450 languages and dialects. Grierson also authored key works on the Bihari languages, Kashmiri, and Pisaca dialects, contributing significantly to the study of South Asian linguistics. His Bihar Peasant Life (1885) provided a rich ethnographic account of rural life. Grierson’s research influenced the fields of linguistics and anthropology, preserving numerous languages and dialects through his meticulous surveys and publications.
