Elections in India generate both wonder and interest globally. Polls have been held at regular intervals in the country since Independence, and on an unprecedented scale, surmounting the massive challenges posed by the geography of the land and the mind-boggling diversity of the Indian populace.

How does the Election Commission of India overcome these challenges? What is the secret behind its uninterrupted success? What ideals and principles drive the people who are involved in accomplishing this mammoth task? And how did India emerge as the ‘Global Gold Standard’ in conducting elections, as observed by Hillary Clinton?

An Undocumented Wonder: The Making of the Great Indian Elections answers these and many more questions about what has often been termed the ‘biggest management event of the world’. A firstperson account of the recent electoral history of India, this educative and perceptive book brings to the reader the author’s experiences, knowledge and insights from the time when he served as an Election Commissioner and, later, as Chief Election Commissioner of India.

Dr S.Y. Quraishi joined the Indian Administrative Service in 1971. After holding several key positions, he became the 17th Chief Election Commissioner of India, the world’s largest democracy. An alumnus of St. Stephen’s College, Delhi University, he has a postgraduate degree in history and a doctorate in social marketing.

As the Election Commissioner and Chief Election Commissioner of India (2006–12), he introduced a number of innovative electoral reforms and strategies for voter education and participation. He has delivered lectures on democracy and elections at prestigious universities including Harvard, Yale, Pennsylvania, California, North Carolina and Cambridge.

He is the author of
Social Marketing for Social Change and two path-breaking papers, ‘Islam, Muslims and Family Planning in India’ and ‘Islam & AIDS’. His coffee-table book Old Delhi—Living Traditions is also quite popular.

Dr Quraishi is well known in India and abroad as a development thinker. He has travelled widely to represent India at international conferences and dialogues and has figured in
The Indian Express list of 100 Most Powerful Indians of 2011 and 2012 and India Today’s High and Mighty power list, 2012.
