Escritora canadiense universalmente conocida por la serie de novelas que narran la vida de Ana Shirley, nació en 1874 en Clifton (actualmente New London), una pequeña ciudad de la Isla del Príncipe Eduardo (Canadá). Tras la muerte de su madre, cuando ella contaba menos de dos años de edad, su padre decidió dejarla a cargo de sus abuelos maternos, en Cavendish, para irse a vivir al oeste del país, donde volvió a casarse. De sus abuelos recibió una educación muy estricta, aunque dicha situación --crecer sola en la casa de dos personas mayores-- estimuló su imaginación, provocando la chispa que le haría crear el personaje de Ana Shirley. Completó su formación en el Colegio Príncipe de Gales, en Charlottetown, y entre 1895 y 1896 estudió literatura en la Universidad de Dalhousie, en Halifax, Nueva Escocia. En 1898, tras haber trabajado como maestra en varias escuelas, regresa a Cavendish para cuidar de su abuela, que había quedado viuda. Se casó con Ewan Macdonald, un ministro presbiteriano, y se mudó a Ontario, donde su marido se hizo cargo de una iglesia. La pareja tuvo tres hijos: Chester Cameron, Stuart y Hugh Alexander, quien murió al nacer, en 1914. El resto de su obra la escribió fuera de Prince Edward Island, ya que después de su matrimonio nunca regresó en vida. Falleció en Toronto en abril de 1942 y fue enterrada en el cementerio de Cavendish, cerca del lugar en el que creció. Es en 1898, al regresar a Cavendish para cuidar de su abuela, cuando comienza a escribir los relatos que darían lugar a su mayor creación: la serie de Ana Shirley (ocho libros que narran su vida, desde la niñez hasta la edad madura). El primero de ellos, Ana, la de Tejas Verdes (Anne of Green Gables), publicado originalmente en 1908, narra la llegada de la inteligente y deslenguada Ana --a la que el propio Mark Twain consideró la niña imaginaria más encantadora que se había creado desde la inmortal Alicia de Carroll-- a su hogar adoptivo en Avonlea, un pueblecito (ficticio) situado al norte de la Isla del Príncipe Eduardo. Tejas Verdes, la propiedad de Marilla, su madre adoptiva, será el centro de su universo infantil y el lugar donde, al fin, podrá sentirse parte de una familia.
