Gerade der Anaesthesist, der gleichsam als "klinischer Physiologe", mancherorts auf sich allein gestellt, internistischen Rat und fachliche Hilfe entbehren muG, ist dazu angehalten, Diabetiker fUr die operative Behandlung sachgemaG vorzubereiten, zumindest aber die Stoffwechsellage in der operativen und postoperativen Phase zu uberwachen und zu lenken. Er ubernimmt damit eine Verantwortung, die von ihm fundiertes Wissen, aber ebenso praktische Erfahrung verlangt. Seinen Blick fur ein altes, doch heute wieder sehr modernes, keineswegs abgeschlossenes Kapitel der inneren Medizin zu scharfen, wertvolle Ratschlage fUr die Praxis zu geben, aber ebenso nahe- zulegen, standige Verbindung mit dem Fachinternisten zu pflegen, soll das Anliegen dieses Bandes sein. DaG die Anaesthesiologie in dieser Richtung keinesfalls miiBige Wege geht, beweist schon die Tatsache, daG heute jeder siebente chirurgisch Kranke Diabetiker ist und daG nur ein Drittel dieser Patienten von seinem Leiden Kenntnis hat. Der ganze Fragenkomplex, der hier zur Diskussion steht, hat somit nicht nur therapeutische Aspekte, sondern ebenso dia- gnostische Bedeutung. Eine Erwartung allerdings vermag dieser Band nicht zu erfUllen, namlich ein absolut giiltiges Rezept fUr die klinische Behandlung zu geben.
