Die Anaesthesiologie, die Lehre von der Narkose, ist noch ein junger SproB am Baum der vielen medizinischen Facher. Vor 150 Jahren war das Risiko einer Operation noch so groB, daB die Narkose als zusatzli- che Todesursache kaum beachtet wurde. Durch die Entwicklung der Operationstechnik und die Einftihrung des Asepsis wurde die Mortalitat erheblich gesenkt, so daB auch nicht lebensnotwendige Operation en ausgeftihrt werden konnten. In diesem Stadium wurde es wichtig, nun auch narkosebedingte Zwischen- falle im Rahmen einer Operation zu verhindem. In der Mitte des vorigen Jahrhunderts gab es nur wenige Substanzen, die ftir eine Narkose geeignet waren. Die wichtigsten waren Ather und Chloroform, und es war sehr schwierig mit diesen Substanzen eine sichere Narkose durchzuftihren, die tief genug war, eine Operation zu ermoglichen und trotzdem dem Patienten so wenig wie moglich zu schaden. Es gab zu diesem Zeitpunkt weder BlutdruckmeBgerate noch Beatmungsmaschinen; auch waren die Eigenschaften des Sauerstoffs nicht hinreichend bekannt. AuBerdem war den damaligen Anaesthesisten meistens nur das Grundleiden des Patienten bekannt, das die Operation erforderlich machte. So konnte der Patient zusatzlich ein Leberleiden, eine schlechte Nie- renfunktion oder eine Pneumonie haben, ohne daB dies dem Narkotiseur bekannt war.
