Due variet� di riso tradizionali, Sataria e Kartki, sono state raccolte da campi specifici situati nel distretto di Madhubani, nel Bihar settentrionale. Un'ampia gamma di batteri azotofissatori (diazotrofi) � stata isolata dalle radici di queste due variet� di riso mediante arricchimento in terreni semisolidi privi di azoto;Utilizzando sonde oligonucleotidiche dirette all'RNA ribosomiale, 53 isolati da Sataria e 137 isolati dalla variet� di riso Kartki sono stati identificati come eubatteri. Di questi 190 isolati, la maggior parte (183) sono stati identificati come proteobatteri α-, β- o γ-.
