Oftmals lassen Menschen auch bei anderen Aktivitäten Musik im Hintergrund laufen. Jedoch wissen viele Menschen nicht, dass hinter dieser Musik eine ganze Industrie und sehr viel Arbeit stehen. Der Beruf des Künstlermanagers ist in der Wissenschaft kaum erforscht. So findet man nur wenige Informationen zu dieser Beschäftigung in der Literatur. Au erdem existiert kein klassischer Ausbildungsweg für diese Arbeit. Diese Tatsachen haben zur Folge, dass es für viele inkompetente und unseriöse Personen möglich ist die Tätigkeit des Künstlermanagers auszuführen. Diese Personen sind Ursache für den schlechten Ruf des Berufes. Die Ausbeutung von Künstlern kommt vielen in den Sinn, wenn sie den Begriff des Künstlermanagers hören. Ebenfalls die Entwicklung seit den 90er Jahren, in der Attraktivität und Qualität der produzierten Musik stark abnahm und viele sogenannte "One-hit-wonders" entstanden, unterstützte den Eindruck eines unseriösen Berufes. Der Manager agiert im Hintergrund und wird deshalb selten von der breiten Masse beim Erfolg eines Künstlers wahrgenommen. Beim Scheitern der Karriere eines Musikers hingegen wird der Grund oftmals an ihm festgemacht. Der Anteil des Managers an dem Erfolg eines Künstlers ist eine Unbekannte, genauso mangelt es an konkreten Informationen über den Berufsalltag eines Managers. Dieser Umstand unterstützt das negative Bild. Für au enstehende Personen ist es relativ schwer einen Einblick in den Beruf zu bekommen, was das nebulöse Erscheinungsbild noch verstärkt. Von grundlegendem Interesse ist es daher, Näheres über den Beruf zu erfahren. "Was tut ein Künstlermanager?", "Warum tut er dies?" und "Was muss ein Manager können, um dies zu tun?" sind zentrale Fragestellung
