Making the varsity basketball team and being cool enough at school were Jake Steed's only worries. All the guys talked about the draft, but the way he saw it, if the Vietnam war was still on when he turned 18, he would be in college on a basketball scholarship.
But that all changed the day his daredevil worked without his safety equipment, plunged to the bottom of the mine, and dropped out of their lives forever. His dad, his hero. Gone.
Jake's mom, suffering from the loss of her husband, and afraid that Jake, who looks and acts just like his dad, would meet the same fate avoids him and neglects the needs of her children leaving sixteen-year-old Jake responsible for his eight-year-old sister, Anna.
When his Aunt Coraleen, Queen of Mean, threatens to take Anna away, Jake realizes that he must make some changes to keep Anna from a stern and unloving environment. His childhood buddy, Jessie, steps in to help.
As his life becomes tougher from lack of food and too many worries, Jake remembers that if he does the best he can, God will help him with the rest. He recognizes God's hand in help from others. Food miraculously appears on their porch, and he has a good idea that the doer of these good deeds is Hatch Enumclaw, an awkward soul who has remained silent since the brutal murders of his parents over 20 years ago for which he was erroneously blamed.
While waiting for Jake at football practice in a park by the Purple Sage Mansion, Anna witnesses a horrifying murder and is told to keep silent or the perpetrator will harm Jake. When Hatch rescues Anna from an arsonist set fire in their barn, the police chief and his deputy try to arrest Hatch. Both Anna and Hatch break their silence, and the arrest is foiled by the city attorney who listens to Anna's story about the Purple Sage murderer. Jake and Jessie are determined to solve the murders of Hatch's parents to absolve him from the stigma that has hung over his head.
While some hopes are denied, doors begin to open for Jake and, trusting in the Lord, he walks though those doors and sees his way to a life beyond basketball, a life that will be satisfying and successful as he does his best to follow the will of God.
