Eklof arrived in Alabama in 1961 as a young man from Sweden, he entered a world profoundly different from the one in which he had grown up. Raised in a society largely free of racial conflict, he was unprepared for the hostility, segregation, and deep emotional divisions that defined the American South during the Civil Rights era. What he witnessed left a lasting impression. Over the following decades, Eklof set out to understand the historical and psychological forces behind anti-Black prejudice in the United States. Drawing on extensive historical research as well as personal experience, he examines how racial hostility developed, evolved, and persisted across four centuries of American history.
