Antiguas rutas de Asia central es un resumen de las tres expediciones que el arqueólogo anglo-húngaro Aurel Stein realizó en Asia central entre 1900 y 1916. Este relato organiza e interpreta la prodigiosa cantidad de materiales que recopiló, ricos en contenido y variados en forma, de las ruinas enterradas en la arena de los alrededores de Jotán -Niya, Keriya, Endere y otros asentamientos-. Siguiendo una larga línea de otros oasis -Dandan Oilik, LouIan, Miran, nombres evocadores arrancados del olvido-, donde las torres de vigilancia sin nombre situadas a lo largo de la vieja muralla, el antiguo limes chino, cuyos montones de basura, aún pestilentes, contenían ingentes documentos oficiales, Stein fue conducido a su descubrimiento más espectacular: el Sutra del diamante, en Dunhuang.


Tras averiguar de dónde partía la Ruta de la Seda de China y examinar las eficaces medidas militares que los chinos habían tomado para salvaguardar este enlace con Occidente, Stein quiso investigar su extremo occidental. Esto significaba tratar de encontrar el lugar donde la frontera oriental del Imperio romano se había enfrentado al Imperio Parto, pues en sus centros comerciales guarnecidos terminaban las caravanas centroasiáticas que transportaban mercancías para Roma. Y como las ideas y los estilos artísticos también viajaban por la Ruta de la Seda, Stein trató de localizar las colonias griegas establecidas por Alejandro Magno cuando hizo marchar a su ejército tan lejos que llegó hasta el Punjab, donde sus exhaustos hombres se negaron a avanzar.


La narración de las tres expediciones de Stein en Asia central es de ritmo pausado, tono amable y moderado; contada con sencillez por un explorador que se sentía como en casa en un mundo desconocido y aterrador, y es a la vez una delicia y una enseñanza. Aurel Stein invita por la propia naturaleza de su hazaña.
