Nicht zuletzt in der Debatte um den Klimawandel werden die Auswirkungen des Fleischkonsums kritisch begutachtet. Der Verzicht auf Fleisch oder sogar gänzlich auf tierische Produkte ist kein reines Phänomen von Subkulturen mehr, sondern erreicht zunehmend auch den gesellschaftlichen Mainstream. Die Motive des Verzichts sind dabei zweifellos äu erst verschieden: ethische Bedenken, Naturschutz oder schlicht die Erhaltung der eigenen Gesundheit - um einige Beispiele zu nennen. Auch in den Medien findet das Thema Vegetarismus/ Veganismus zunehmend Beachtung: Auf den privaten Fernsehsendern werden vegane Fleischalternativen diversen Tests unterzogen, zum Tolerance Day zeigt ein privater Sender einen Bericht über den sogenannten "Antitierbenutzungshof" und diverse Zeitungen weisen regelmä ig auf die steigende Zahl prominenter Persönlichkeiten hin, die sich vegetarisch oder vegan ernähren. In den meisten grö eren Supermärkten ist es mittlerweile kein allzu gro es Problem mehr Tofu, Seitan und andere Fleischalternativen zu kaufen und auch vegane Cafes und Gaststätten sind in vielen Städten zu finden. Beschäftigt man sich intensiver mit der Thematik, scheint vor allem die vegane Ernährungsweise oftmals unmittelbar mit dem Konzept des Antispeziesismus verknüpft zu sein und an dem australischen Philosophen Peter Singer kommt man in kaum einer Diskussion herum. Dabei bezieht Singer sich zum einen auf den Begriff Antispeziesismus und verleiht ihm andererseits durch den Wirbel um seine eigene Person erneuten Aufwind in der öffentlichen Wahrnehmung.
