Toutefois, l'art est un territoire aux frontières infiniment complexes et mouvantes: le sens attribué aux couleurs, aux formes et aux autres éléments n'est pas universel. Les principes énoncés dans cet ouvrage ne sont donc que des lignes directrices.

L'enseignement des arts oscille la plupart du temps entre deux tendances opposées: d'un côté, une pédagogie du laisser-faire édifiée sur l'idée d'un enfant naturellement artiste qui n'a rien à apprendre des adultes; de l'autre, une pédagogie de la transmission de connaissances, le plus souvent en histoire de l'art, qui laisse peu de place à l'appropriation personnelle des oeuvres.

Cet ouvrage propose une pratique d'enseignement et d'apprentissage à mi-chemin, en invitant le lecteur à prendre possession du langage plastique avec une double approche: une approche raisonnée qui tend à l'objectivité et une approche sensible et imaginaire qui, à l'inverse de la première, recherche l'entière subjectivité. Il ne s'agit donc pas de prôner un formalisme pur ni un expressionnisme exclusif.

Être expert en art, c'est posséder des connaissances artistiques. Mais ce n'est pas que cela. Souvent la personne qui n'a pas reçu de formation artistique ignore que, avant toute chose, c'est s'autoriser à laisser parler sa sensibilité en mettant les mots justes sur ce que le corps perçoit et en accordant du temps à l'expression de sa propre nécessité intérieure, car, comme l'a très bien dit Bachelard, l'imagination va toujours trop vite. Faire usage de sa sensibilité pour créer ou pour apprécier une oeuvre n'est donc pas une étape préalable à un apprentissage, mais bien un apprentissage en soi.

En s'appuyant sur la dévolution d'une expérience esthétique, cet ouvrage s'adresse à tous ceux qui souhaitent apprendre à exploiter la richesse du langage plastique dans leurs activités de création ou dans leurs activités d'appréciation.
