Henri Nouwen nació en Nijkerk, Holanda, el 24 de enero de 1932,

y desde muy joven se sintió llamado a consagrarse a Dios en la vida

sacerdotal. Se consagró en 1957 y estudió Psicología en la Universidad Católica de Nijmegen, en su país natal. En 1964, viajó a los Estados Unidos para estudiar en la Clínica Menninger y dictó clases en la Universidad de Notre Dame de París, y en las

- Universidades de Yale y de Harvard (Estados Unidos).

Durante la década del setenta, y durante varios meses, Nouwen vivió y trabajó con los monjes trapenses en la Abadía del Genesee en Nueva York y, a principios de los años ochenta, estuvo viviendo con las

personas más pobres del Perú. En 1985 lo invitaron a conocer la comunidad de El Arca, impulsada por Jean Vanier, en Trosly, Francia; la primera de más de cien comunidades creadas para ofrecer un hogar y dignidad a las personas con discapacidades. Un año más tarde, Nouwen haría del Arca "El Amanecer': próxima a Toronta, su nueva casa. Terminó su búsqueda incesante de Dios y se desprendió de su intensa humanidad el 21 de septiembre de 1996 en Holanda; fue enterrado en Ontarío, Canadá. Henri Nouwen, sacerdote y profesor internacionalmente reconocido y respetado, escribió más de cuarenta libros sobre vida espiritual que merecieron ser publicados en por lo menos veintidós idiomas, y de los que se hicieron hasta el presente más de dos millones de copias.
