Chr. Cornelius Palma, dem Statthalter der Provinz Syria, den Befehl, in das arabische Reich der Nabatäer einzumarschieren, es dem "Imperium Romanum" einzuverleiben und gleichzeitig die politische Autonomie des ersten und am längsten existierenden Staats seiner Zeit zu beenden. Zusammen mit dem Nabatäerreich ging auch die Weihrauchstra e, eine der ältesten Handelsrouten der Welt, die von Südarabien bis zum Mittelmeer führte und auf der viele der wichtigsten Güter dieses Zeitalters transportiert wurden, in die Hände des Trajan, der fortan die gesamte Mittelmeerwelt sein Eigen nennen konnte. Doch diese Annexion lief anders ab als vergleichbare Unternehmungen beispielsweise in Dakien oder Germanien. Während dort ruhmvolle Schlachten ausgetragen worden sind, die mit prunkvollen Festen und Triumphzügen in der Heimat gefeiert und mit Münzen, beschriftet mit "Dacia capta" und "Germania capta", zu Ehren des Kaisers gewürdigt wurden, fiel nahezu jegliche Propaganda bezüglich der Eingliederung Arabiens in das römische Reich aus. Trajan erhielt nicht das Epitheton "Arabicus", seine Münzen zierte nicht der Schriftzug "Arabia capta" und auch antike Schriftsteller schwiegen grö tenteils über dieses Ereignis. Die Münzprägungen kamen sogar ohne jegliche Unterwerfungsgesten aus, stellten die personifizierte Arabia in aufrechter Haltung dar und titulierten die neu gegründete Provinz Arabia als "Arabia adquisita". Auf der anderen Seite finden sich bei den Nabatäern, die ihre Geschichte grundsätzlich kaum verschriftlichten, auf den ersten Blick ebenso nur wenige Hinweise auf eine gewaltsame Unterwerfung.
