Die achte Auflage vertieft die Diskussion der Effekte eines Mindestlohns, liefert neuere Ergebnisse zur Lohnungleichheit und berücksichtigt die neuen gesetzlichen Regelungen und Änderungen des Arbeitsrechts. Wolfgang Franz, Jahrgang 1944, war bis März 2013 Präsident des Zentrums für Europäische Wirtschaftsforschung /ZEW) und Inhaber eines Lehrstuhls für Volkswirtschaftslehre an der Universität Mannheim. Von März 2009 bis Februar 2013 war er Vorsitzender des Sachverständigenrates zur Begutachtung der gesamtwirtschaftlichen Entwicklung und beriet als einer der "Fünf Weisen" die Bundesregierung in wirtschaftspolitischen Fragen. Er wurde im März 2003 in dieses Gremium berufen, dem er bereits von 1994 bis 1999 angehörte. Er ist Mitglied der Heidelberger Akademie der Wissenschaften sowie der Deutschen Akademie der Wissenschaften Leopoldina. Des Weiteren ist Professor Franz Mitglied des Wissenschaftlichen Beirats des Ministeriums für Wirtschaft und Technologie. Seine Hauptarbeitsgebiete sind die makroökonomische Volkswirtschaftslehre, die Arbeitsmarktforschung und die empirische Wirtschaftsforschung. Er ist Ehrendoktor der Universität Magdeburg und der European Business School (EBS). Das Land Baden-Württemberg hat ihm die Verdienstmedaille des Landes verliehen.
