La mayor parte de la obra lírica de Nicolás Fernández de Moratín es de carácter tradicional y festivo. Escribió romances sobre el mundo islámico, y poemas eróticos como el Arte de las putas, censurado por la Inquisición. Esta lo incluyó como libro prohibido en la edición de 1790 del Index Librorum Prohibitorum.

Arte de las putas circuló exclusivamente en forma clandestina durante más de un siglo después de ser escrito.

La obra consta de cuatro cantos con 475 versos. Por su tema ha sido relacionada con otros textos del mismo género entre los que descuella El jardín de Venus, de Félix María Samaniego (editado también en Linkgua ediciones).

Arte de las putas es un anecdotario o una guía de la noche madrileña del siglo XVIII. Los apodos de las prostitutas y la mayoría de las historias son reales. Son parte de la vida del autor y de sus contemporáneos. Moratín describe sus personajes con el propósito de darlos a conocer entre los madrileños de su época, amantes de la noche.

El lector encontrará aquí otra visión del erotismo. El autor ofrece una imagen tal vez más mundana, ajena a la de otros clásicos del tema. Los consejos y la ironía son los principales ingredientes del poema que se presenta como una apología elegante y sarcástica del más antiguo de los oficios.
