This book presents selected proceedings from the International Conference on Artificial Intelligence for Resilient Infrastructure and Sustainable Building Materials (AIRISE 2025) and addresses the urgent need for resilient infrastructure. Current challenges such as resource scarcity and colossal carbon footprint demand innovative solutions in design and construction. Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a promising tool which can process large datasets, predict outcomes, and optimize solutions, enhancing infrastructure resilience. It aids in identification, predictive modelling, forecasting, and real-time monitoring, providing essential insights for damage detection, pattern recognition, and predictive maintenance. Developing sustainable construction materials in civil engineering is crucial to meet the demand for high-performance structures. Research in this area focuses on AI applications, such as artificial neural networks (ANNs) for concrete evaluation, deep learning models, and life cycle assessment (LCA) for a circular economy. AI-driven innovation in smart cities, metaheuristic techniques, and soft computing is increasingly essential for material testing, characterization, and waste utilization. Hence, this book volume explores the challenges of resilient infrastructure, examines AI's potential solutions, and explores real-world AI applications in design and construction.
Sanjay Kumar Shukla is a world-renowned expert in Civil (Geotechnical) Engineering. He serves as the Founding Editor-in-Chief of International Journal of Geosynthetics and Ground Engineering and is the Founding Geotechnical and Geoenvironmental Engineering Research Group Leader at Edith Cowan University, Perth, Australia. His eminence extends to his Distinguished Professorship of Civil Engineering at ten renowned universities across India and the USA, including Delhi Technological University, Delhi, Indian Institute of Technology Madras, Chennai, and Southern Illinois University, Carbondale. He is a registered Chartered Professional Engineer in Civil and Geotechnical Engineering with Engineers Australia, holds the designation of Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Engineer in Civil Engineering, and is recognized as an International Professional Engineer in Civil Engineering by the International Engineering Association. Shukla serves on the editorial boards of several international journals. He is a distinguished fellow of American Society of Civil Engineers and Engineers Australia, a life fellow of Institution of Engineers (India) and Indian Geotechnical Society, and a member of several other professional organisations. With an extensive career spanning over 28 years, he has excelled in teaching, research, consultancy, administration, and professional engagement. Renowned for his prolific contributions, Shukla has authored over 320 technical articles, including more than 210 scholarly journal publications. An accomplished author/editor of 27 books, encompassing 7 textbooks and 25 book chapters, his impact extends across academia and industry. Shukla's generalised analytical expressions for seismic active thrust (2013) and passive resistance (2015) are integral to global engineering practices for retaining structures. Additionally, his wraparound reinforcement technique, developed during 2007-2008, stands as a recognized sustainable ground improvement method. Further solidifying his influence, Shukla's seven research mantras, unveiled in 2022, are shaping a sustainable research ethos worldwide. Shukla is among the world's top 2% of scientists as per Elsevier's October 2023 announcement. Recognized with prestigious accolades, such as the 2021 ECU Aspire Award from Business Events Perth, Australia, and the most prestigious 2018 IGS Award from the International Geosynthetics Society (IGS) in the USA, he is lauded for his outstanding contributions to development and use of geosynthetics.
Bhavna Tripathi has a rich and versatile experience of over 24 years in industry, teaching, consultancy, and research.
