In regard to the present work, it is the first dictionary of language ever published, and has necessarily been a difficult task. In the fourteen thousand words here collected, will be found many in daily use by the people, that no Bengali scholar will understand. Many of these words have been written as they dropped from the lips of the people. While the author has thus endeavored to give the spoken language, and inserted the more common Sanskrit words that are used in the Puthis, and therefore known to the people. These words are also used in our school books, and scripture translation. But it should be borne in mind that they are often used in Assamese, with a modified meaning, and a different pronunciation. A few words are used with a slight difference of form and pronunciation. These have been placed together as one word, and coupled by a bracket. No word however has been allowed to pass without careful examination. This book is good for those who are learning English.

Miles Bronson was one of the first American Baptist missionaries who worked in the state of Assam in northeastern India. Bronson arrived at Sadiya in Assam on July 8, 1838. Previously, Nathan Brown and O.T. Cutter, along with their families, had landed at Sadia with the objective to go to northern Burma and southern China through Sadiya. Initially, as part of their mission, they worked among the local peoples by establishing coed schools, writing books in the local languages and preaching Christianity.
