" -17 PolitikerInnen der Unionsparteien in einem Offenen Brief, erschienen in DIE ZEIT Nr. 06/2008 Dieses Zitat verdeutlicht eine relativ neue Entwicklung in Deutschland und in anderen L�ndern Europas: ein zunehmendes �ffentliches Interesse am Thema der Integration von Einwanderern. Im Folgenden soll anhand einer kurzen Skizz- rung aktueller Debatten zur Integration von Einwanderern die Relevanz dieser Arbeit verdeutlicht werden. Vorher werden einige zentrale Begriffe erkl�rt, ohne dabei der genauen Kl�rung dieser Konzepte in sp�teren Kapiteln vorzugreifen. Unter Assimilation verstehe ich das Verschwinden von Unterschieden z- schen ethnischen Gruppen in ihren kulturellen Gewohnheiten, sozialen Interak- onen, ihrer Identit�t usw. (Rumbaut und Baltes 2001; Alba und Nee 2003). Let- lich ist damit also die Angleichung ethnischer Gruppen gemeint. Integration meint dagegen die Einbettung oder Eingliederung von Einwanderern oder eth- schen Gruppen in die Gesellschaft (Esser 2000). Die Begriffe Einwanderer, Immigranten, Migranten und Zuwanderer werden im Rahmen dieser Arbeit s- onym verwendet und bezeichnen Menschen, die selbst oder deren Eltern au - halb Deutschlands geboren und im Laufe ihres Lebens nach Deutschland ein- wandert sind und zumindest zeitweise hier ihren Lebensmittelpunkt haben. Es gelten also auch Personen mit deutscher Staatsangeh�rigkeit und die als ethnisch deutschen Aussiedler als Einwanderer, sofern sie oder ihre Vorfahren nicht in Deutschland aufgewachsen sind. Die Bezeichnung Deutsche wird dagegen f�r diejenigen ohne Migrationshintergrund gebraucht. Der Begriff wird also nicht im rechtlichen Sinne f�r Menschen mit deutscher Staatsangeh�rigkeit verwendet.
