De flesta historieintresserade har h�rt talas om Olof Rudbeck, men f� har haft m�jlighet att l�sa hans verk. Senast verket trycktes var p� 30-/40-talet.

Olofs verk har uppm�rksammats av David King i hans bok "Dr�mmen om Atlantis: Olof Rudbecks jakt p� en f�rsvunnen v�rld".

"P� 1670-talet l�nkades naturforskaren Olof Rudbecks intresse och skaparkraft in p� ett nytt omr�de, fornforskningens. Han f�rdjupade sig i och anst�llde omfattande j�mf�relser mellan de gamla isl�ndska och de klassiska f�rfattarna. Han trodde sig d� finna f�r det f�rsta, att en m�ngd av de klassiska f�rfattarnas uppgifter i sj�lva verket syftade p� forntidens Sverige, f�r det andra, att dessa i stor utstr�ckning bestyrktes av den isl�ndska litteraturen.

K�rnpunkten i Rudbecks uppt�ckt var, att det Atlantis, som Platon beskriver, alls icke, som man dittills antagit, �r n�got diktat land utan Sverige, fr�n vilket n�stan hela Europas och en god del av Asiens kultur utg�tt. �verv�ldigad av denna uppt�ckt grep han sig an med det verk, som skulle fylla st�rre delen av de trettio senare �ren av hans liv. Atlantica �r ett verk av Olof Rudbeck den �ldre som gavs ut fr�n 1677, d� tryckningen av f�rsta bandet p�b�rjades, till 1702, det fj�rde bandet blev aldrig f�rdigtryckt). F�rsta delen av Atlantican utkom 1679 och anger redan i titeln det helas huvudtanke: Atland eller Manheim, d�dan Jafets avkomne - ut till hela v�rlden, henne att styra, utg�ngne �ro ... Efter f�rsta delen utkom med ungef�r tio �rs mellanrum ytterligare tv� delar. En fj�rde del, som var under tryckning, gick f�rlorad vid den stora branden i Uppsala 1702.

Sj�lv har Rudbeck genom det ofantliga rykte han vann som fornforskare delvis bringat de �vriga sidorna av sin livsg�rning i gl�mska. Han hyllades i sin egen samtid f�r de teorier som lades fram i Atlantica, men ur vetenskaplig synpunkt �r verket idag fr�mst intressant som ett tidstypiskt exempel p� barocktidens universalistiska vetenskapsideal."
