Examensarbeit aus dem Jahr 2006 im Fachbereich Amerikanistik - Literatur, Note: 1,0, Heinrich-Heine-Universität Düsseldorf, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Folgt man den Formulierungen der Unabhängigkeitserklärung von 1776, so basiert die amerikanische Demokratie auf den Grundwerten von Freiheit, Gleichheit und dem Streben nach persönlichem Glück. Doch galten diese Rechte wirklich für alle Bürger des jungen Staates? Vor allem Afroamerikaner, die zu einem sehr hohen Anteil als Sklaven auf den Feldern in den Südstaaten arbeiteten, konnten nicht von diesen Rechten Gebrauch machen. Erst der von 1861 bis 1865 stattfindende Bürgerkrieg sollte für viele Afroamerikaner neue Hoffnung bringen. Glaubt man den Worten der "Emancipation Proclamation", so waren die Sklaven, von denen viele Afroamerikaner waren, nun gesellschaftlich frei. Doch stattdessen setzte sich der Leitspruch "Separate-but-Equal" in vielen Gemeinden durch. Vor allem die konservativen Regierungen in den Städten der Südstaaten versuchten Afroamerikaner durch Reglementierungen, wie den "Jim Crow Laws", auf Distanz zu halten. Diesem gesellschaftlichen Zustand versuchten afro-amerikanische Intellektuelle mit Hilfe von entsprechenden Organisationen, wie der NAACP, und den Werken vieler Schriftsteller ab dem Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts abzuhelfen. Die Anliegen der Schwarzen kamen zum ersten Mal kraftvoll zum Ausdruck. Es war ein öffentlicher Protest gegen gesellschaftliche Unterdrückung und Rassismus. Unter anderem Intellektuelle der sogenannten "Harlem Renaissance" begannen, die rassistischen Zustände in den USA zu kritisieren und ihre Vorstellungen von der Zukunft der amerikanischen Schwarzen zu äu ern. Einer dieser Intellektuellen war Langston Hughes. Er erkannte die Notwendigkeit, allen Schwarzen seine Ideen von der Zukunft "seines" Volkes mitzuteilen. Er bettete seine Gedanken vor allem in die Idee des "amerikanischen Traumes". Für Langston Hughes bedeutete der "amerikanische Traum", dass neben politischer Freiheit
