Dazu wird zunächst ein kurzer Überblick über das Gesamtkonzept des Werkes gegeben. Die Autoren konzipieren eine Dialektik zwischen dem Kapitalismus und der Kritik am Kapitalismus. Die Kritik tritt dem Kapitalismus zum einen in Form von Sozialkritik, geäu ert zum Beispiel von Gewerkschaften, und zum andern in Form von Künstlerkritik gegenüber. Diese äu ert sich in einer avantgardistischen Kritik an der industriekapitalistischen Unterdrückung von Freiheit, Kreativität und Autonomie einerseits und in der Kritik an Entzauberung und mangelnder Authentizität andererseits. Die Dialektik zwischen Kapitalismus und Kritik erweist sich als endlos: Der Kapitalismus braucht die Kritik zur Ausbildung eines "Geistes", welcher die notwendigen Rechtfertigungsmechanismen bereitstellt. Andererseits muss die Kritik immer wieder kanalisiert werden, um noch konstruktiv zu sein. Dies leistet der Kapitalismus, in dem er die Kritik in Rückgewinnungsschleifen einbindet. Die Autoren verstehen darunter kapitalistische Mechanismen, durch die die Forderungen der Kritik (zum Beispiel nach mehr Autonomie im Arbeitsprozess) erfüllt werden, die gerade dadurch aber zu neuen Unterdrückungen und neuen Ungerechtigkeiten führen. In dieser Arbeit wird zunächst die Entstehung der Künstlerkritik dargestellt. Im Anschluss werden ihre zentralen Themen, Emanzipation und Authentizität, erläutert. Zugleich wird jeweils dargestellt, wie der Kapitalismus die Kritik reintegriert, und gerade dadurch Anlass zu weiterer Kritik liefert.
